Time Trials

Well, that’s it for the year. We made a decision last night (24th August) that it was getting too dark to safely run another time trial this year. It’s been a fantastic season that the club has thoroughly enjoyed staging. Thank you to all that took part, especially the one or two who have competed in every race of the series. It has been a great success and we offer our congratulations to those of you who have taken this challenging course on and made it your own. Our course records are held by Greg Sandy and Joanna Carritt which will stand until next year. Our oldest competitor is proud of his 29:11, as is our youngest at 33:29. Fantastic, and well done!

Watch for news of a hill climb in October. More details to follow.

Course Records go again!

New course records were set again for both the men’s and women’s time. Despite the strong southwesterly breeze creating a headwind on the return leg, Greg Sandy took 39 seconds off the previous record set at the previous event by Andy Winterbottom. His time was 21:42:00.

A newcomer to the course, Joanna Carritt, took a spectacular 2 minutes and 37 seconds off the women’s record, previously held by Alison Western, with a time of 26:41:00.

Andy Smashes Course Record

Wellington Wheeler’s 10 mile time trial held on 27th July 2011 brought out Andy Winterbottom of the Somerset Road Club who showed clear intentions by collecting the ‘number 10′ spot, the reserve of fast men.

He proceeded to set a blistering pace around the course displaying his expertise and smashing the course record with a time of 22 minutes and 21 seconds, knocking 53 seconds off of the previous course record.

Perfect conditions and a warm summer evening attracted 16 riders, some riding the course for the first time. Andy set a real challenge to other riders showing the time to beat.

Home rider Lee Constable was certainly not to be intimidated, riding his best time of 23:00. This was 1 minute and 32 seconds clear of the next rider Carl Masters Somerset RC + Tri who scorched into Longforth car park to sign on with just a few minutes to go then returning a healthy time of 24:32. Jason Gunney DSFRS, who has ridden all the events this season, recorded his personal best time of 24:49.

Lady rider Martha Beacham (Som RC + Tri), nursing a knee injury, rode her best time of 29:57.

Race time keeper Charles Biscoe (WWCC) escaped his duties for the night and rode a time of 29:11. Simon Booth (DC Cycle Works) rode his first time trial and showed some pace with 30:26. Ever improving and impressive Richard Nelson (WWCC) produced a personal best of 27:03. Martin Slade Yeovil CC and Martin Deakin Som RC decided to give our course a go for the first time and recorded times of 25:25 and 27:15. Gerald Gilbert, Gerald Page and Carl Guppy all from Som RC returned times of 27:04, 26:54 and 27:43. Tim Lunn WWCC improved with his best time 30:56. Alice Rimes and Ian Musgrove WWCC riding a two up recorded 29:13.

The next event will be on the 10th August 2011 sign on in Longforth car park. First rider off at 7:15pm. More details www.wellingtonwheelers.co.uk .

Time Trial in the Sun

13th July saw the warmest, sunniest and most still day of the season for our evening time trial. As a result we had a good turnout of 13 competitors who put in excellent times despite the copious excuses of injuries and equipment failure that slowed them down. Overall winner was Andrew Kelly who set the third fastest time of the season coming home in 23:43. The womens course record is still held by Alison Western (29:18) although she failed to match that time tonight despite taking the 1st woman home position.

Thursday 25th May 2011 saw the second in the summer series of Time Trials to be held by the club. There was a smaller entry but this was probably due to the blustery and rain-threatened conditions.

Despite that, the rain held off and both course record holders improved on their previous performances. Mark Athurst came home first overall with a time of 23:14:00, while Martha Beacham led the women at 30:33:00.

The next race in two weeks is on Wednesday 8th June with the first rider going off at 19:15.
