What we do
Wellington Wheelers likes to support cycling in all its forms. However most of the activities the club currently runs are
aimed at touring cyclists with regular Sunday rides, Wednesday evening rides in the summer months and longer Audax rides.
We also run a number of social activities during the year which are attended by both cycling and non cycling members.
Our History
The club was originally formed in 1948, and was very successful until 1951. In May 1952 a few members tried to restart the
club but it folded in the September of that year.
At that time there was cycle shop in Mantle Street run by Les Sheppard, father of Colin, who ran the shop in the High
St until a few years ago.
During this period there was a lot of activity in the club with over a hundred members, all day Sunday rides until 10pm!
and frequent time trial events.
The club captain at the time was Cyril Bowerman (Gerald's brother). In the monthly magazine the club produced at the time,
Gerald won the Novices "10" on the 2nd September 1949 with a time of 28.04, which was a record at the time.
The club was reformed in September 1981, mostly at the initiative of Graham Tomlinson ( who had a cycle shop in South
Street at the time) and Terry Manuel. Also involved were Pam and Gerald Bowerman. The first meeting was in the Crown Inn at
West Buckland, and the first ride was to Willand Cafe on 1st November. The club night was on Wednesday evenings at Rockwell
Green village hall.
A 25th anniversary ride was held on the first Sunday in November 2006 to Willand.
